Portugal has been ranked as the 7th safest country in the world according to the 17th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI). This ranking, which is led by Iceland for the 16th consecutive time, places Portugal one position higher than the previous year’s index. With a score of 1,333, Portugal is positioned behind countries like Iceland, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Singapore, but ahead of countries such as Japan, Switzerland, Canada, and Finland.

It is worth noting that despite 126 countries showing improvement in their peace index between 2009 and 2020, the 2023 GPI reveals a concerning trend of deteriorating global peace for the ninth year in a row. While 84 countries have recorded an improvement, 79 countries have experienced a deterioration. This highlights the fact that the negative impact of post-COVID civil unrest and political instability has outweighed the positive developments, as regional and global conflicts continue to escalate.
