How Strong is the Portuguese Passport?

Portugal Passport

The Henley Passport Index Ranking places the Portuguese passport in fourth position, allowing holders to visit 191 destinations worldwide without the need for a tourist visa. This index, which is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), serves as a reference tool for evaluating global mobility and passport strength.

The top spot is shared by Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Singapore, as their passports grant access to 194 out of 227 destinations. Finland and South Korea hold the second position with 193 accessible countries, followed by Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands in third place with 192 destinations. The Portuguese passport shares the fourth position with Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, and the United Kingdom, all allowing visits to 191 destinations. Greece, Malta, and Switzerland complete the top five, enabling travel to 190 destinations without a tourist visa. The ranking also includes countries like Australia, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, and Poland in sixth place (189 destinations), Canada, Hungary, and the USA in seventh place (188 destinations), Estonia and Lithuania in eighth place (187 destinations), Latvia, Slovakia, and Slovenia in ninth place (186 destinations), and Iceland closing the top ten with access to 185 destinations.

According to Christian H. Kaelin, president of Henley & Partners, the average number of visa-free destinations has nearly doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. However, while the highest-ranked countries enjoy impressive travel privileges, Afghanistan, at the bottom of the ranking, only has access to 28 visa-free countries.
